“Listen, buddy…”
While ageism often brings to mind older adults being dismissed or sidelined, younger people deal with it too.
It shows up in many ways, like not being taken seriously at work, in relationships, or when trying to make major purchases that require trust and money.
In fact, there have been reports that younger adults may experience slightly more discrimination than older adults.
That’s what TikTok creator Conar Blalock (@conarblalock) says happened when he walked into a Ford dealership ready to buy a truck.
In a video that’s been viewed more than 31,600 times, Blalock shares how a salesman’s reaction left him feeling written off before the conversation even started.
In the video, Blalock says he showed up at a Ford dealership planning to buy a 2025 King Ranch F-250, but the interaction went sideways immediately.
“I went to the Ford dealership this morning to buy a 2025 King Ranch F-250,” he says at the start of the clip, explaining that he initially mistook the truck’s color but still liked it. “Still super nice, but the salesman came out… I don’t know if it’s ‘cause I’m young and he thought I couldn’t afford it.”
Blalock makes it clear that what bothered him wasn’t being told no, but being dismissed outright. “Listen, buddy, your job is not to tell me if I can afford it,” he says. “Your job is to try to sell me a truck.”
Instead, Blalock says the salesman didn’t even attempt to walk him through options or start the sales process. “Didn’t even try,” he adds, pointing out that a basic conversation could’ve gone a long way.
He flips the perspective. “If I would’ve been him and heard a kid say, ‘Well, I think I’m interested in this King Ranch,’ and he couldn’t afford it, I’d sell him something at least,” Blalock says. “At least try.”
Rather than pushing back or asking for another salesperson, Blalock says he walked away entirely. “So I bought a fruity drink from Dutch Bros instead,” he jokes, adding that he also picked up a new cowboy hat, ran errands with his partner, and grabbed a sandwich. “So no truck, but I think the drink is about the same. Like, same purchase.”
Blalock’s story isn’t an isolated one. Similar complaints about age-based dismissal pop up across Reddit, Facebook, and automotive forums.
In one Reddit thread, a 20-year-old buyer said a Subaru dealership refused to let them test drive a car at all, citing their age before discussing numbers.
In a Facebook post, another said they weren’t allowed behind the wheel until the dealership “checked the numbers,” despite showing clear interest in purchasing.
On an automotive forum, one user asked directly whether other young buyers struggled to be taken seriously. The responses flooded in, with many saying dealerships often assume younger shoppers are “just looking,” even when they’re ready to buy.
In the comments, viewers immediately shared similar experiences, many saying the story felt painfully familiar.
“Same happened to me,” one person wrote, explaining that another salesman eventually took them seriously, ran their credit, and finalized a deal. “The other guy didn’t look happy.”
Another commenter said the solution was simple: “That’s when you stop talking to him and go talk to a different salesperson.”
Others said the issue wasn’t just age, but the dealership itself. “I’ve had that happen to me before at a Ford dealership,” one user wrote, adding that they never returned and found a better location elsewhere.
Some commenters said gender made things worse. “I went to get a truck once, salesman wouldn’t even let me drive it because I was a girl,” one woman wrote. “Told me to have my dad come test drive. Did not buy the truck.”
