Caterpillar has added an all-new model to its Next Generation excavator lineup. The Cat 319 compact radius hydraulic excavator fills a gap between Cat's 315 and 325 compact radius models, giving contractors an option that provides heavier lifting capability than the 315 without requiring them to move up to the 325 platform. This 19- to 20-ton model is based on Cat's 317 excavator platform and features the same powertrain and front linkage.
According to Brian Stellbrink, senior market professional with Caterpillar, Cat has addressed an underserved size class with a compact radius package that's very nimble on space restricted job sites while still delivering performance in lifting applications along with fast cycle times and work tool carrying capability.
Key applications include construction, utility work, road maintenance, and land clearing.
The new model is built on a 2.8-metre (9.2-foot) undercarriage which delivers the extra stability that operators need for lifting operations and handling a variety of work tools. For added versatility, the 319 can be configured with a two-piece boom and a blade.
The wider undercarriage, paired with the 2.2-metre (7.2-foot) track gauge, also allows for up to a 7 percent boost to lifting capacity, including the option to work with a 1-cubic-metre (1.31-cubic-yard) General Duty bucket.
Safety technologies available for the 319 include an optional 360-degree camera to help maximize visibility, Cat Detect to alert an operator to the presence of people around the machine, and multiple track-shoe options to suit varying conditions. Additional safety features include e-fence, a seatbelt reminder, and stability & lift assist. These technologies combine to give operators the confidence to efficiently handle heavy loads, work in tight spaces, and remain aware of their surroundings.
The Cat 319 has a Cat C3.6 engine that delivers 99 kW (133 hp). Cat says that it is well-suited to the machine's selectable power modes, which variously match engine and hydraulic power to current working conditions through Smart Mode, help minimize fuel consumption in Eco Mode, or allow operators to maximize productivity through Power Mode.
The Cat 319 features Cat Grade with 2D as standard. A Cat Grade 3D Ready option is available. Cat Grade with Assist automates boom, stick, and bucket movements, and Cat Payload provides on-the-go weighing to help operators hit their load targets without overloading or underloading. Advanced Payload is available as an upgrade. The optional Operator Coaching feature is an in-cab system that recognizes opportunities for operators to be more productive and prevent machine wear and tear.
