BOMAG's new flexible and fuel-efficient BW 18 RH pneumatic tire roller is designed to complete surface sealing in highway, interstate, and airport construction and maintenance applications.
Built to the size and sharing many of the same components as the field-tested BW 28 RH, the new BW 18 RH offers a maximum operating weight of 39,683 lb (18,000 kg) and a maximum wheel load up to 4,960 lb (2,250 kg).
The new roller's three-way oscillating front axle ensures even weight distribution across all tires. The 8-tire roller offers an 80.4-in (2,042-mm) rolling width, and individually oscillating tires provide the kneading effect needed to provide a superior surface finish as well as high compaction forces for proven results on chip-and-seal applications. Helping to achieve optimum compaction performance, contractors can equip the new BW 18 RH with the available tire inflation control system that allows individual tire pressure to be adjusted between 29 to 116 psi (2.0 to 8 bar) from the seat. A standard pressurized water system plus optional spring-loaded scraper brush or coco mats and thermal aprons help to keep asphalt from sticking to the tires.
Powered by the 74.2 hp (55.4 kW) Deutz engine, the BW 18 RH delivers ample torque combined with low fuel consumption and emission levels. Standard BOMAG ECOMODE operation plus the elimination of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to meet emissions standards, reduces long-term operating costs. With its maximum travel speed of 9.9 mph (15.9 kmph), the new roller is capable of 90 to 168 ton-per-hour (80 to 150 tonne-per-hour) compaction output at 4 to 5 in (10 to 12 cm) lift thicknesses.
BOMAG's unique pneumatic roller ballast system significantly increases application versatility. The machine features a large 106 ft3 (3 m3) ballast compartment. Flexible weight plate ballast options allow customers to increase total roller operating weight from 11.2 to 17.9 tons (10 to 16 tones) without using the ballast compartment. Maximum ballasted weight of 20.2 tons (18 tonnes) can be achieved through filling the ballast compartment alone or by a combination of adding plate and ballast compartment weight.
A spacious ROPS operator's platform plus easily rotatable and slidable driver's seat help to elevate operator comfort throughout the day. Seat adjustability combines with a modern frame design to deliver excellent all-round visibility as well as great views to the wheel faces and outer tire edges. A responsive travel control lever with multi-adjustable arm rest helps to reduce fatigue. Also, a "rocker brake" spans the width of the platform to improve braking and roller control.
