A woman says she was in Nashville on vacation when her 2014 Dodge Ram 1500 went into limp mode on the highway. Here’s how she eventually made it home.
TikTok creator Nicki (@vallerugooo) posted a video about the scary situation she says she recently found herself in.
“So my friends and I went to Nashville in my Ram 1500, and the day we were supposed to drive back home … my truck starts saying that it’s overheating,” she says.
Of course, Nicki says that led her to check the coolant level in the truck. “Coolant’s fine,” she says. She adds that the engine temperature warning light went off after she continued to drive for a while.
Nicki says she and her friends are in the Dodge a short time later when the truck starts overheating again, and this time the check engine light comes on with it. She says she visited an auto parts store to get a diagnostic, which led her to believe the issue was related to a faulty sensor.
She says she purchased the sensor believing that she would be able to make it back to her accommodation to do the swap. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. As she was on her way back to her friends, the Ram “goes limp,” Nicki says. “I’m like, ‘That’s not good.’”
She says she exited the highway and turned the truck off immediately, called a tow truck, and got the Ram towed to a nearby repair shop. It took a couple of days, but Nicki says the shop eventually informed her that the truck’s engine had “blown up.”
Anyone who’s ever dealt with an engine failure knows that it’s not a cheap repair job. Instead of shelling out between $5,000 and $8,000 for a new engine, Nicki says she decided to purchase a used Ram to replace the entire truck. In fact, she recorded the entire video from her new truck, which successfully got her back home from Nashville.

In the comments section, viewers said issues should have been expected, given the car’s make.
“I’m going through the same thing,” one person wrote. “Only it was the O2 sensor at first, then the fuel rail pressure sensor. This was all yesterday. On the way to work this morning, the same messages.”
“I already knew you’d have problems when you said ‘trip in my Ram 1500’ lol,” a second person wrote.
“You seriously trusted a Ram to take you outta state and get you home. You got more faith than I do,” a third person wrote.
According to Yahoo, Dodge parent company Stellantis is currently facing a lawsuit from Ram 1500 owners who say an issue related to “limp mode” caused their trucks to stall while on the highway. Limp mode is basically the vehicle limiting how hard the engine can work in case of overheating or another issue.
The drivers associated with the suit are essentially arguing that their trucks went into limp mode inappropriately due to an issue with the engine control module.
