“Engineers should have to assemble and disassemble everything they design.”

Few things bring out a mechanic’s frustration and salty vocabulary faster than a bolt that loosens normally but apparently can’t be removed. At that point, the job becomes less about turning a wrench than trying to understand the bit of apparent engineering negligence staring back at you.

We see and hear this situation up close in a recent TikTok clip from mechanic Arianna Palmer (@arisinnovativeauto26) where she’s faced with an alternator that’s held in place by a bolt with nowhere to go. It doesn’t take her long to voice the justified frustration she faces with the job ahead of her.

“Whose [expletive] idea was it to put this bolt alternator on right here?” she asks while wiggling and pulling against an alternator with nowhere to go. So far the video has been viewed more than 775,000 times.

The problem is clear as Palmer tries to move the bolt that hits the surrounding bodywork before it can clear the alternator. It’s a simple fact: there isn’t enough room to pull it the rest of the way.

Palmer tries shifting the alternator and working the bolt around, illustrating the problem more than actually looking for an angle that might somehow create the missing clearance.

The predicament immediately brought out two distinct camps in the comments. One blamed the people who designed the car in the first place.

“Engineers should have to assemble and disassemble everything they design,” one viewer wrote.

The other camp offered a solution that initially sounds almost as ridiculous as the problem.

“Take off engine mount & jack up the engine … simple,” suggested one commenter.

“Simple” is a descriptor that only applies for folks ready to do some heavy lifting. As another viewer pointed out, “There is ZERO reason to have to do all that just to get a alternator off.”

Several commenters identified Palmer’s patient as what appears to be a 2001–2005 Honda Civic with the 1.7-liter engine. Owners of that generation have been complaining about remarkably similar alternator clearance issues for years.

In a 2010 Honda-Tech discussion, a Civic owner described trying to remove the alternator’s main upper bolt only to discover that it “hits the frame” when pulled outward. The responses included supporting the engine and shifting it enough to gain the necessary clearance.

That doesn’t necessarily mean moving the engine is required every time somebody replaces an alternator.

A 1A Auto walkthrough for the 2001–2005 Civic describes removing the bracket for the power-steering reservoir before attacking that upper bolt. Even then, the instructions call for pulling the bolt only “as far as it goes,” then moving and prying the alternator free rather than simply expecting the bolt to slide completely out into open space.

Other Civic owners have documented a similarly crowded process. One detailed replacement guide calls for moving the power-steering pump and reservoir aside and removing additional brackets before there is clear access to the alternator.

So Palmer’s apparently impossible bolt may be less a case of a fastener that can never come out than one that requires knowing exactly which surrounding pieces Honda expects you to get out of its way first.

Deeper in the comments, viewers convened a kind of group therapy session for anyone who has spent an afternoon discovering that a supposedly routine repair requires dismantling seemingly unrelated parts of the car. One viewer recalled a Chrysler repair manual calling for removal of the front bumper to change a headlight. Another simply wrote, “Wait til you have to take a fender off to change a headlight bulb.”

There’s some curious engineering behind repairs like this linked to the fact that a car isn’t assembled by dropping every part into a finished engine bay one at a time. Components go in during a carefully planned sequence, often before the pieces around them are installed.

That means that years later, a mechanic working on the completed car has to, in essence, take apart a puzzle where whole sections have been glued in place.

That’s what makes Palmer’s alternator bolt such a compelling and aggravating case study for mechanics. Nothing appears to be broken, seized or installed incorrectly. It’s just that the bolt needs more room than the engine bay has to give.

The solution, then, comes down to having a kind of sixth sense to know which neighboring part Honda expected to be moved first.
