“Volkswagen, explain yourself.”
A Boston woman was distraught after she returned from a weekend away and found that the overhead console in her Volkswagen Tiguan was hanging by an electrical cord.
TikTok creator Marwa (@thecitylists) posted a video that shows the aftermath of what happened to the Tiguan while she was out of town. The inside of the car looks normal, except that the overhead console panel has fallen down and is hanging by the cord.
“Hi, just me and the piece that just started to fall off when I was on Nantucket,” Marwa says. “I come back after a weekend on the island. And it’s just hanging off. This is the condition we’re in, and nothing happened. That’s what drives me crazy. Oh, ‘Get the Tiguan,’ everyone said.”
Marwa turned to the internet, where she says she learned that “this is a thing that happens.” She says she then called the dealership where she purchased the car, but she says she received questions instead of answers.
“They’re like, ‘What are you talking about? What could’ve happened to possibly make it fall off?’ I don’t know,” she says. “The fact that it was hung by these tiny screws that decided to crack or maybe the fact that this was probably made on a 3D-freaking-printer? I don’t know. Now I have to drive around with it taped up until it gets figured out. It’s so stupid.”
In the caption, Marwa wrote, “Volkswagen, explain yourself.”
One person in the comments said they are a Volkswagen warranty administrator and asked the model year of the vehicle. Marwa clarified it is a 2020.
“Due to defective, weak plastic mounting tabs that break under heat or stress, [the 2020 has] a 2-year, 24,000 mile warranty extension on the overhead console,” they wrote. “Take it in.”
A second person said, “It is a thing that happens, and it’s not a Volkswagen-specific issue. The entire headliner on my 2-year-old Acura fell down when I went over a raised sidewalk.”
A third person disagreed, writing, “This happened to my 2020 Tiguan. It’s a very common issue for Tiguans.”
Others said they’ve had a Tiguan, and nothing like this ever happened. “I’ve never had an issue like this and I was a rough beast when I had my Volkswagen Tiguan. I have a brand-new Audi now. No issues yet,” another said.
The commenter is correct that Volkswagen extended the warranty coverage for the overhead console on the Tiguan from model years 2019-2022 for two years, or 24,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the expiration of the new vehicle limited warranty that came with the car.
If the issue happens within that time period, a driver can take their vehicle into an authorized dealer and have it replaced for free, as long as the diagnosis confirms the part failed due to a warranty defect.
According to the bulletin, Volkswagen will not cover the repair if the diagnosis reveals that the failure happened due to an unrelated issue. The warranty extension does not cover damage or malfunctions caused by outside influence, such as an accident or vehicle misuse or neglect.
A 2021 Tiguan owner posted a thread to Reddit’s r/Tiguan in 2025 to say that this happened every time they shut the door or drove over a pot hole. “It’s an acknowledged issue,” wrote one commenter. “Take it in for a replacement on VW’s tab. Quickly, before it knocks down your rear view mirror. Ask me how I know.”
