“You’re both going to jail.”

A Dodge salesman says he caught a woman trying to pull off a straw purchase when shopping for a new vehicle with her brother.

In a TikTok with over 76,600 views as of this writing, Dodge salesman Black Matilda’s Daddy (@black.matildas.da) says a woman came in to look at a Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack. He swiftly concluded that she was attempting to do a straw purchase. The situation led to him threatening to call the police.

“They complained about the 1,200/month payment and refused to do the deal,” Black Matilda’s Daddy begins.

He was having none of it. He says he told them, “Sign right there before I call the [expletive] police. This is a stick. Imma call the police,” then added, “Guess what? The white ones. You’re both going to jail.”

A straw purchase involves someone getting financing for an auto loan for a vehicle they have no intention of driving. Typically they’re going to let a friend or family member drive it.

While it might seem harmless, this is considered fraud.

It is deceptive to mislead a lending institution about who will be the primary driver of a vehicle. CoPilot reports this is a crime that can carry significant punishment, such as legal fines, repossession, or driver’s license suspension for both parties.

One of the main reasons why straw purchases are illegal is because it can make it harder, potentially impossible, to locate the vehicle in the event of a repossession.

A straw purchase shouldn’t be confused with situations like a parent buying a car for their child or co-signing for a vehicle. During these buying processes, the buyer clearly indicates who will be driving the vehicle.

Some viewers claimed that a straw purchase ruined their credit.

“A family member had tricked me to do a straw purchase when I was in my early twenties…credit still [expletive],” one wrote.

“I’m not signing [expletive] for no one. Not even a school permission slip,” another joked.

Others were simply stunned by the proposed monthly payment for a Challenger Scat Pack.

“1.2k for a scat is outrageous,” one said. A second agreed, “1,200 a month is crazy work.. if I was the straw I would bounce.. That’s crazy.”

“Y’all credit is jacked. You can get a scat pack payment for 650 and that’s including insurance. Scandalous. Be smart folks,” one commented.

Numerous commenters were unclear on what a straw purchase even is.

“Person A has the right to buy a certain thing, Person B had their rights taken away to purchase said thing. Person A buys it for person B and now y’all both going to jail. Most common with guns,” one explained.
