Time’s Design nod focuses on the Fiat Topolino’s compact electric footprint, Italian styling, and everyday city practicality over range or power.
The Fiat Topolino is getting the kind of recognition small city cars almost never see. Time put the two-seat electric quadricycle on its 2026 Best Inventions list in the Design category, highlighting how it rethinks what a city car can be.
The magazine’s October 15 announcement credits the Topolino’s compact footprint, simple electric drivetrain, and open-air Dolcevita variant for reworking everyday urban mobility instead of chasing big range or horsepower numbers.
Time’s Best Inventions list is an annual editorial project. Editors solicit nominations across categories like design, sustainability, and accessibility, then pick entries that show a fresh solution to an old problem, whether that is an appliance, a piece of software, or, in this case, a tiny car. The honor does not speak to market share or future production volume on its own. It is about ideas the editors think are worth attention.
That separation matters because the Topolino already has real numbers behind it, apart from the award. Fiat says the car became Europe’s segment leader in the electric quadricycle category in 2025, with about a 20 percent share that carried into 2026, helped by orders that climbed roughly 30 percent year over year in the second quarter. Time’s write-up leaned on the “distinctive Italian design” and “fresh approach to urban mobility” that first caught Stellantis engineers’ attention when they revived the historic nameplate.

The Design category is where Time tends to spotlight objects that solve a familiar problem in an unexpected way. The Topolino keeps things deliberately simple with a small electric vehicle built for short trips, tight parking spots, and errands without the weight of a full-size EV.
Arnaud Belloni, CEO of Fiat, Abarth and Lancia and chief marketing officer for Europe at Stellantis, called the honor validation of a long-term design philosophy. “Topolino proves that even the smallest vehicle can carry a big idea,” he said in a statement.
Belloni tied the award back to the brand’s postwar reputation for small, characterful cars. “At Fiat, we have always believed that mobility should be a source of freedom and enjoyment,” he added.

Detail work separates the Topolino from a golf cart with a windshield. It has intuitive charging, a cabin shaped around two people and cargo rather than five, and styling that borrows cues from the brand’s classic small cars without turning into imitation. Design-focused buyers have already built on that premise, as shown by the custom Giorgetto Giugiaro and Elkann one-off Topolino variants.
The open-top Dolcevita trim is the clearest expression of that Italian design language, stripping away doors for a breezier version aimed at short, low-speed city runs. It is a small car that treats being small as its main strength.
In the US, where quadricycles do not fit neatly into existing vehicle categories, interest in the Topolino has taken a different shape. Fiat has now officially brought it here, with a starting price of about $13,995 including destination and a 5.4-kilowatt-hour battery rated for about 46 miles of range.
