“They didn’t realize we were still in the parking lot.”

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of getting a new car. You sign on the line, get the keys, and take to the open road. Well, that’s most people’s experience. One couple says they bought a new Toyota then something happened that most of us wouldn’t expect in a million years. They ended up trapped at the dealership. Literally.

In a video with more than 63,000 views, content creator Ana (@_ana_alcala) shows what happened after her husband purchased a vehicle from a Toyota dealership.

In the video you can see that it’s dark outside and the gate at the exit is closed, leaving them with no way to drive off the lot.

“We’re locked in,” Ana says.

It seems a dealership employee closed the gate without realizing the couple was still there.

“My husband got a car, and they didn’t realize we were still in the parking lot, I guess,” she says. “And they locked us in.”

In the caption Ana said she’s used to this kind of thing.

“Why do the most random situations ALWAYS happen to me,” she wrote.

A dealership lot is full of expensive merchandise that it stores outside, making it an obvious target for theft.

Titan Protection notes that dealerships are particularly vulnerable because their lots tend to be large, open, and accessible from several points. It’s also often the case that overnight staffing is limited or nonexistent.

Common risks in car lots are break-ins, catalytic converter theft, tampering, and vandalism. Wheels and key fobs are also common targets, Secure Source notes.

Property damage adds an extra headache for dealerships who then have to spend time and money on repairs, insurance claims, and cars in limbo.

Locking the lot gate limits vehicle access and adds a physical barrier between the inventory and anyone trying to drive off with it.

Security companies recommend using several layers of protection rather than relying on only one thing. Those measures can include:

People in the comment section didn’t hold back. Most were amused.

“You can’t just get a car, you have to pay for it,” a top comment joked.

“This happened to us on Friday. We had to call our sells guy lol,” a person said.

“I took my Honda in for service and they didn’t realize I was in the waiting area and closed up service. They apologized and didn’t charge me for the service,” another wrote.

“I guess you’ll have to park and take an Uber home,” someone else said.
