Driving around with a child in the backseat isn’t always easy. While you’re trying to focus on the road you’re also often answering a string of questions, mediating sibling squabbles, and trying to keep them entertained before they ask the dreaded question for the umpteenth time: “Are we there yet?”
As annoying as these disruptions can be, every parent knows that the worst things often happen when the kids are abnormally quiet. That’s when an unpredictable disaster may strike.
One Chevrolet truck owner’s kid used their time in the backseat to create a gordian knot out of the seatbelt.
In a short video, Alex (@alex.page6) shows the strange entanglement his child managed to create in the Chevy’s backseat when seemingly no one was looking.
The seatbelt is wrapped around a middle section of the backseat that provides access to a hidden compartment. The belt appears to be wrapped around it multiple times. It also looks like it would’ve taken quite a bit of strength—not to mention creativity—to get it contorted just so.
“Have kids they said!!!” the text overlay jokes.
Alex explains that the way the seatbelt was looped caused it to lock. But he doesn’t seem to be worried about it.
“No big deal, just got to take the lower bolt out!” he adds.
A family car needs to do more than just fit everyone inside. A product tester at Good Housekeeping says your first move is to check its safety ratings.
The woman, who is a mother herself, recommends looking at crash-test scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. She also suggests testing driver assistance features, such as automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.
If your children require them, you should also confirm if the vehicle is carseat compatible, specifically if the second row has enough accessible LATCH anchors for the number of seats they need. Those planning to use the third row should inspect its anchors, too. And make sure the doors open wide enough to load any gear you may require and have sufficient rear legroom to prevent a bulky carseat from forcing the front seats too far forward.
Also keep in mind how much space it has. Cargo space fills up fast once a stroller, groceries, luggage, and a playpen enter the equation. A flat-folding third row or adjustable cargo floor can make that space more flexible.
Smaller details also matter, like cupholders and storage pockets that give bottles, books, toys, and bags somewhere to go.
