“Not sure if she was gonna fight you or hug you.”
A man surprised his wife with her dream car: a 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, and captured her reaction on camera.
Jaci Grana (@farfalla1320) published her surprise online, and although she owns a later model GT350, there’s a big reason why the super muscle car is such a beloved ride.
In a caption for her video, Grana writes, “My hubby told me someone else bought my dream car. But the grandbaby wanted to see it anyway. Shocker, it’s mine.”
The clip begins with Grana walking into a car dealership with her granddaughter. All the while, her husband records the two of them admiring the white-and-blue-striped Shelby Mustang she thought had been sold to another buyer. Upon entering the showroom, she wipes her feet on a floor mat as she’s greeted by an employee. From behind the camera, Grana’s significant other can be heard saying, “My granddaughter wanted to see this Mustang.”
Grana looks down at the little girl and says, “What do you think? Isn’t it pretty?” to which the young girl responds, “Yeah.”
The two walk towards the vehicle, and Grana follows up with, “What do you think of it?” to her granddaughter. She replies, “I think it looks beautiful.”
Behind the lens, Grana’s hubby says, “I think it’s Grandma’s,” while she keeps her eyes on the car, admiring the ride. She doesn’t notice the dealership worker extending a pair of keys in her direction. While staying locked into looking at the vehicle, she issues a sarcastic, “Yeah, I wish.”
The sales rep walks closer to Grana, still holding out the keys. “Here, Grandma,” he says. This motion gets Grana’s attention, but she still isn’t buying it.
Grana believes a joke is being pulled on her until her husband reveals the surprise. “It’s yours. I bought it this morning,” he says. She looks incredulously towards the lens as the salesman motions toward the vehicle. “Why do you think there’s a bow on it?” the rep asks.
Overcome with emotion, Grana asks her husband, “You did what?”
“Mm-hmm,” he tells her off camera. “No, you—” she stops herself from crying as she paces near the Mustang. “You what?” she asks.
“Yeah,” he tells her, as the store worker hands the keys to Grana’s granddaughter, asking the child to hold onto them. The kid pauses for a bit before finally taking them, smiling.
“You seriously bought this this morning?” she asks again. “It’s yours,” he tells her. Grana collects herself and then begins to walk towards him, tears in her eyes as the video comes to a close.
Commenters who saw the video had varied responses. One pointed out that Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” was playing over the dealership’s speakers, noting the connection.
Another person noted a key detail regarding Grana’s reaction upon learning the Mustang was now hers. Namely, that she was quicker to embrace her husband rather than the car after learning he bought it for her. “The way she came right to you and not the car. She deserves it, and you deserve her.” they wrote.
Whereas someone else thought her beeline toward the lens may’ve had a less heartwarming conclusion. “Why’d it end like that? Are you ok? Did she come with a hug or a punch?” they asked.
The answer to the aforementioned quip was provided in a follow-up video to Grana’s account. She and her husband recorded themselves taking a ride in the car, both grinning from ear to ear. On the inside, it sports a black leather interior and a white-and-blue-accented gear shift knob to match the car’s paint job.
A few days later, she also posted another clip highlighting the first repair she had to make to the ride. In the video, Grana films herself popping the trunk open. As it turns out, a fastener in the trunk bed came undone, causing the top portion to flop a bit. Grana fixes it easily, grabbing a black screw that fits perfectly into the slot. She turns it around with her hand until it’s secure, and her first-ever fix on her dream car is finished.
Grana explains that although she loves her GT350, nothing can really compare to the GT500. And it’s understandable why she has such a soft spot for the vehicle. For starters, it’s the last year Ford used its original, 5.4-liter supercharged S197 iron block engine. Analog lovers will also appreciate the car’s three-pedal layout, pairing old-school driving feel with more modern touches.
What’s more is that the iron-block V-8 is known to be a modder’s dream, handling excessive amounts of boost for tinkerers. Furthermore, its TR6060 transmission is widely considered bulletproof, so folks who like to accelerate and shift hard can do so with more peace of mind in this ride. Owner reviews on this Edmunds forum for the vehicle seem overwhelmingly positive as well.
And when it comes to aesthetics, it does feature a retro-aggressive vibe. While one won’t mistake it for the gorgeously classic ‘69 Mustang, it is unmistakable, carrying Ford’s muscle car DNA into its design language.
