‘That’s so tacky.’

A couple was excited to test drive a diesel 2024 Cadillac Escalade. Unfortunately, the excitement was short-lived. Here’s why.

TikTok creator Hensel Hues (@henselhues) posted a video about her diesel Escalade test drive late last week. It has since amassed more than 1 million views.

“We showed up to look at this 2024 Diesel Escalade,” she writes in the video’s on-screen caption. “We got the keys for a test drive, but another salesman cut in before we could leave. By the time we got back from the drive, the car was sold and the new owner was giving us the stink eye.”

In the caption, Hues writes, “Car shopping is so interesting.”

In the comments section, viewers expressed mixed opinions on the diesel Escalade. Some viewers said the couple was lucky to be beaten to the dotted line, and others said they love driving this model.

One viewer said, “I’m a technician that works on these and I think a higher power was looking out for you.”

“I’m obsessed with my ‘24 diesel Escalade,” a second person said. “I get 36 [miles per gallon] on the highway. Twenty-three mpg on main roads. Best car.”

Others criticized the dealership for its perceived lack of professionalism. “I don’t know where you went, but I would never go back,” one wrote. “As someone who grew up in the car business, it speaks volumes about a dealership.”

“That shouldn’t be allowed,” a second person agreed. “That’s so tacky.”

Another person questioned the wisdom of shopping for a diesel as a personal vehicle in the first place. “I don’t get why people are so fast to buy a diesel when you aren’t going to tow anything,” they wrote. “As a truck owner, the only reason why diesel is superior in my world is because of the higher towing capacity.”

Hues replied, “The difference in mpg is actually astounding though.”

Cadillac sold an Escalade with a 3.0L Duramax engine starting in 2021, and it quickly became a cult favorite due to its considerable towing capacity and “exceptional” fuel economy. The news that the 2024 Duramax Escalade would be the last caused a surge in sales last spring. That explains why there was a rush to grab the one Hues and her husband test drove at the dealership.

A Reddit user contemplating the purchase of a 2024 diesel Escalade two years ago asked r/Cadillac for advice. “For what it’s worth, my dad has a [Chevrolet] Suburban with the diesel and he said he went from Flint, Mi, to his home in Connecticut on a single tank of fuel,” wrote one person. “That engine in that package is impressive.”

An Escalade owner posted to the Cadillac Forums last summer that he was considering trading in his 2023 Duramax. He’d decided to move to Colorado full-time and found that the Duramax wasn’t necessary now that he wasn’t regularly driving from Texas to Denver.

“I’ve loved owning and driving it, as it’s the perfect vehicle for our regular drive between Austin and Denver,” he wrote. “Great mileage and great range.”
