‘Bro is literally going nowhere fast.’
A South Dakota man was leaving his local Buffalo Wild Wings when he spotted a Chevrolet Malibu grinding on a bare rim. How does that affect the car?
TikTok creator @sd_djcowboy posted a video of the situation. The TikToker is sitting outside of a Buffalo Wild Wings in his car when he hears a loud screeching noise. He points his camera at a white Chevy Malibu driving down the parking lot.
The Malibu is screeching because the front driver’s side tire is completely missing and is on just its bare rim. The last remnants of the tire slip out as he pulls up next to the TikToker. Sparks are shooting out from the vehicle. The TikToker, who is on the phone, states the obvious: “Somebody’s grinding out.”
In the video’s comments section, viewers made light of an extremely dangerous and reckless driving situation. Essentially, this driver clearly hit something that shredded his front tire. Instead of pulling over, the driver is doubling down on the situation.
“Bro is literally going nowhere fast,” observed one viewer.
“His biggest problem is that he’s not getting traction with the front wheel drive,” joked a second person.
A third viewer quipped, “Malibu’s most wanted.”
Others remarked on the driver’s evident dismay at the situation he found himself in. “I like the pause of defeat before trying again,” one person said.
And some said the situation reminds them of a very specific pop culture artifact. “POV: Me in Grand Theft Auto running from the cops,” they wrote.
A Reddit user posted a photo of what it looks like when you drive on a bare rim to r/JustRolledIntotheShop. And driving on a bare rim doesn’t just make you a target of internet speculation—it’s also incredibly dangerous and bad for your car.
Simply put: Your car’s rims are not supposed to touch the road. If they do, because you’re driving on a bare rim or flat tire, you are putting your vehicle’s entire front end in serious peril. Be prepared to replace your brakes, rotors, and suspension.
In a forum, drivers described what happens to a vehicle when you drive on a bare rim. One person wrote, “The tire would rip to shreds, the road surface would suffer, the steering would be extremely awkwards, and I suspect eventually the axle and hub would complain a lot. Speed would be impossible. I wouldn’t drive far in such a vehicle at all unless maybe to crawl a couple of hundred yards if I knew there was a gas station ahead.”
However, others said they’ve seen mixed results. “I drove 32 miles on the shoulder on a flat tire/rim and made it to a garage with no wheel damage,” one person said. “It took forever, it was hard to steer, and I expected to have to buy a new rim and tire. Just got a retread tire for $20 installed. Don’t drive without a spare [or] roadside assistance.”
