‘If you didn’t have the video no one would believe you.’

The sunroof on a woman’s Kia randomly explodes off the top of the vehicle. She doesn’t believe what happened until she views it on security tape.

TikTok creator Meg (@meg_cris) posted a video of the incident on March 17. The video shows a computer screen with surveillance footage pulled up.

The footage shows a row of vehicles in a parking lot. After a few seconds, viewers can see the sunroof of Meg’s Kia suddenly pop off and fall to the ground in front of the vehicle.

“Your sunroof wouldn’t just fly out,” the on-screen text reads.

Apparently, that’s not true. In the caption, Meg wrote, “Kia America, explain yourself.”

In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to Meg getting security footage of the exact moment the sunroof of her Kia flew off.

“The fact that we all looked at the Kia,” joked one viewer.

“You stopped paying your sunroof subscription, didn’t you?” a second person said.

“As an auto damage appraiser, I seriously wouldn’t have believed it either without the video, because what do you mean it just popped out like that?!” a third person said. “It’s not supposed to do that. That is absolutely wild and definitely a first for me.”

“NO BC MY SUNROOF FELL OFF MY KIA TOO,” another commenter added.

This isn’t the first instance of a Kia owner reporting their panoramic sunroof spontaneously exploded. “Sounded like a gunshot,” wrote one 2024 Telluride owner who posted to Reddit’s r/KiaTelluride four months ago. “I had tiny shards of glass all over me and we saw the sunroof shattered. It coned up and looked like intense pressure built up.”

Another person posted to Facebook in August about their Telluride’s sunroof randomly exploding. “Sound of a gunshot and sunroof just exploded,” the person wrote.

Kia was the target of a 2021 class action lawsuit that alleged its panoramic sunroofs are “prone to” shattering. More than 200 owners of Kia Sorento, Optima, and Sportage (2011–2015 models), as well as of the 2014–2015 Soul and Cadenza, complained that the sunroofs in their vehicles were faulty and potentially hazardous.

In March, a federal judge in Ohio decided to dismiss a lawsuit that claimed the panoramic sunroof of a 2012 Kia shattered as a result of a defect. The judge said that the plaintiff didn’t present evidence of the alleged defect.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration investigated panoramic glass sunroof breakage in Kia Sorentos (2011–2013 model years). In 2021, the administration said it did not find sufficient evidence of a safety-related defect in Kia’s sunroof. The investigation is currently closed.
