“What are the odds?”

A woman and her boyfriend were shocked to wake up and find one of their vehicles totaled and no note left behind. They turned to their neighbor across the street with a Ring camera for help. They couldn’t believe it when the neighbor declined.

TikTok creator Stacey (@sober.hag) posted the first part of the story in a Jan. 7 video. “Someone totaled my boyfriend’s car in our driveway and we think it’s the same neighbors that have the Ring camera footage of it,” she says.

Stacey explains that a week earlier, her boyfriend went downstairs to get in his car for work. The back of his car was completely smashed. “You can’t open the trunk, his headlight’s busted—it’s an older car, so it’s totaled,” she says.

There was no note, but the couple did notice that there was a working Ring camera mounted on a neighbor’s place across the street. Unfortunately, that neighbor wasn’t home.

In the meantime, the couple called their insurance company and the police to file a report. During the process, Stacey’s boyfriend noticed red paint chips on his silver car. After examining the dent, the couple was sure it was a red SUV that had caused it.

“The neighbors across the street drive a red SUV and it’s now been like two, three days we haven’t seen it at this point,” she says. “What are the odds?”

After several days, Stacey’s boyfriend went to see another neighbor with a Ring camera. That neighbor’s camera didn’t catch anything, but he did offer to go with Stacey’s boyfriend to knock on the first neighbor’s door.

This time, a woman answered the door, but she said she’d already reviewed her Ring camera footage and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary. She later denied that it worked at all. Stacey also noted the woman’s son or grandson drives a red SUV.

Stacey’s boyfriend told the woman he would pay to have the paint chips analyzed, which appeared to concern the woman. Stacey believes that the red SUV driver was moving too quickly as he attempted to back into his driveway and accidentally hit her boyfriend’s vehicle. “And then they just ran,” she says.

If this happens to you, Progressive recommends leaving the car exactly where it is, taking photos and videos of the damage, and immediately calling the authorities to file a report. It helps a lot to have leads for the police, as in the case of the couple in this video. That gives insurance adjusters and police at least something to work with.

Suspicions ran high in comments on Stacey’s video, which has amassed 1.5 million views as of this writing.

One person said, “As an insurance adjuster, file a claim against their insurance. Their insurance will make them take photos of their car.” Others suggested the couple file a claim with their own insurance and get them to investigate.

“It’s totally them,” a second viewer said. “If it wasn’t, they would be helpful and show you whatever footage they have to stop any suspicion from coming their way. Also, why would they keep a broken camera in the window?”

Stacey replied, “That’s another thing. A neighbor in our building had his car stolen out of the same driveway we were hit in, and the neighbor with the camera offered the footage and helped catch the person. So it’s extremely obvious.”

A third person suggested, “Get an attorney. I promise you it’ll be the best decision in your life.”

In a follow-up video, Stacey posted a video of the red SUV after it finally made it back to the neighbor’s driveway. It does indeed have a big dent in the back bumper.
