“My husband thinks I’m crazy for sitting in my car.”
A woman says her husband thinks she’s weird for staying in the driver’s seat during an oil change—and millions of people apparently had thoughts.
Ashlyn Hudson (ashlo2552) recorded herself sitting inside her car while the service was being done.
“My husband thinks I’m crazy for sitting in my car while they change my oil? Like, does no one else do this?” she asked in the text overlay of her video.
Hudson didn’t seem especially bothered by the setup.
“It’s lowkey fun, and also idk I’m lazy,” she added in the caption.
As of this writing, her video has more than 8.1 million views.
Although some people thought it was strange, there are oil change chains that are designed around keeping customers in the driver’s seat.
Take 5 markets its service as a “drive up, stay in your car” oil change. The company says customers drive into the bay and remain in the vehicle while technicians perform the service. It even tells customers to keep children and pets buckled in while the work is being done.
Valvoline Instant Oil Change uses a similar model. The company says it prefers customers to stay in their cars during the service so they can “enjoy the show.” The company estimates the process takes about 15 minutes.
Jiffy Lube, however, is more location-specific. At least some locations advertise “Stay in Car” as an available amenity and allow customers to choose between staying in the vehicle and waiting in the lounge. But Jiffy Lube also notes that some services may not be available while the customer remains inside for safety reasons.
Since there isn’t one universal rule for oil-change shops, Hudson sitting behind the wheel isn’t inherently unusual or against industry practice. It is, however, unusual for customers to stay in the vehicle when it’s put up on the lift.
Plenty of viewers were surprised Hudson stayed in the car at all.
“I don’t think they’re supposed to allow that…” one commenter wrote.
Someone else imagined a much worse scenario—especially since Hudson’s car was on a lift with her still in it while they serviced it.
“Until they drop it off the lift with you in it lol. My oil place has a hole underneath the garage, so they don’t even have to [lift] your car up,” the commenter said.
“Oh baby, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen,’ another added.
“Why are you in the air?” a third viewer asked.
Another person said the experience made them nervous even when employees explicitly told them to stay put.
“One time I got my car changed like this, and they told me to stay in the car, and I was terrified,” the viewer wrote.
Others thought Hudson’s setup was completely normal.
“I do!! I love it; it’s like 15 mins,” one commenter said.
“It’s so fun loll,” another person added.
“Me realizing people don’t do this,” another viewer quipped.
Hudson seemed amused by how divided the comments became.
“No…. The comment section [is] sending me,” she replied.
One commenter offered the most practical explanation.
“Tbh it depends on the place you go to. Like at Valvoline, they have you stay in the car unless other work is getting done on it. And I used to go to another place that they had you stay in the car. But I have been to places where they have you get out as well,” they wrote.
