“Is it an amazing deal?”
A car salesman said he’s tried talking a regular customer out of trading in their cars too early.
However, that customer’s decision could create opportunities for other car buyers.
TikTok creator Henry (@henrysellss) is a car salesman at Genesis of Winston-Salem in North Carolina. In a recent video, he says, “We have this customer here that trades out of vehicles every four to six months.”
Henry says he’s tried to stop the customer from trading in their vehicle mere months after buying it in the past.
“We have tried talking him out of doing that as it loses him a bit of money in the long run, but he has the money [and] he doesn’t mind doing it,” Henry says. “For him it works, and for you it creates an awesome opportunity.”
Henry anticipates viewers’ question about how someone else trading in a Genesis, which is owned by Hyundai, can benefit them.
“What might that opportunity be?” he asks rhetorically. Then he explains that the customer just traded in a 2026 Genesis GV70 3.5T Sport Prestige with just 2,188 miles.
“So it’s essentially as brand new of a car as a pre-owned car can get,” Henry says. “And this is what it looks like. It’s gorgeous. And since this is the 3.5T, it’s fully loaded.”
If the opportunity wasn’t clear already, Henry says you can buy what is essentially a new car for less because the original driver took the depreciation hit. A new GV70 at that trim level will cost about $70,000 brand-new.
“You’re basically getting as close as you can with a new car, with tons of warranty, and you’re saving $7K on the deal,” he says.
Generally, experts recommend waiting to trade in a vehicle until it requires a repair that exceeds its overall value.
But if someone like Henry’s customer decides to go against that advice and trade in early, it may create an opportunity for another person to get a good deal on a nearly-new vehicle. You may want to make sure that the incentives offered for brand-new vehicles don’t essentially equal the reduced price for a lightly-used one, however.
According to Kelley Blue Book, the average buyer is getting about 8% off in incentives on new vehicles these days. Of course, that figure can go up depending on the car and where it was purchased.
In a Reddit thread posted to r/GenesisMotors, a person asked whether 15% off MSRP is a good deal on a 2026 GV70 2.5T SP. Another person posted a thread to r/GenesisGV70 and said they were able to get 9.5% off MSRP recently.
In the comments section of the video, viewers debated whether this truly qualifies as an opportunity or if it’s merely a small discount on a lightly used vehicle.
“Is it an amazing deal?” asked one person. “What’s the typical discount off of new?” Henry told the person that the discount is generally $3,000-$4,000.
“Nine percent off is a heck of a deal on a used (not ‘technically used’) car,” a second person said.
Another person said, “He must drive those cars hard. No thanks.”
