“I will be writing an email to Discount Tire.”

A woman went to a Discount Tire in Brentwood, Tennessee, to get the tires on her Hyundai Santa Fe rotated. Then she says she was accused of bringing someone else’s vehicle into the shop.

TikTok creator Tasha Warren (@tashawarren49) posted a video about the incident over the weekend. “You’d think I’m making this stuff up, really,” she says to start the video. “I went to Discount Tire to get my tires rotated, because it’s time.”

She visited the Cool Springs location in Brentwood, and an employee told her it would take approximately an hour. So she went to a nearby restaurant to grab a bite to eat and waited.

“One hour becomes two,” she says. “Two hours becomes three. Let me walk back over to Discount Tire. I walk in and he says, ‘Your [Vehicle Identification Number] is connected to another vehicle.’ I said, ‘How is that possible?’”

Another employee interjected, she says, to ask who owned her vehicle before her. Warren says she replied that no one owned it before her because she purchased it brand new.

“The other guy said [they] called the other people and they’re thinking they’re getting scammed,” Warren says. “And they have the same vehicle as myself. How is that possible? The people you called know good and well they didn’t drop their vehicle off at Discount Tire. They know their vehicle is not at Discount Tire.”

Warren says she drives often and therefore has visited Discount Tire locations in Texas, Ohio, and Tennessee over the past year.

“For some reason, I come out to the one in Cool Springs, and you’re telling me you don’t think I own my vehicle?” she says. “That it’s stolen or it’s somebody else’s vehicle? I handled it very well. I really did. But today was a long day.”

At the end of the interaction, the employee figured out how to correct Warren’s account to the correct vehicle. “I will be writing an email to Discount Tire to complain about the location out here in Brentwood, Tennessee,” she says.

In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to Warren’s story and offered their opinions on what happened.

“A tire shop should never be running your VIN,” said one person. “Weird.”

Is it weird for a tire shop to run your VIN? Not necessarily. Your VIN allows dealers and repair shops to quickly learn when the vehicle was made, what parts it requires, and any recalls or other information necessary for repair.

The issue here appears to be potentially an issue with how Discount Tire entered the VIN when creating Warren’s or the other party’s account. We contacted the Brentwood Discount Tire location via phone and are waiting on a call back from management to learn more.

While there may be nothing nefarious at play in this situation, it’s important to note that VIN scams are a very real thing. Fraudsters do sometimes target people selling their cars online by asking for the VIN so they can check the vehicle history report. But then the link they send steals the victim’s personal information.

Motor1 contacted Warren via TikTok comment and direct message for comment. We’ll update this if she responds.
