“This car has too much lore.”
All cars have stories. Some are better than others. One self-proclaimed “boring millennial” has a car with a backstory that makes characters on The Odyssey seem tame.
In a recent video, she explained the illicit lore behind her late mother’s Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
TikTok creator Lex (@fastforwardrewind) doesn’t mince words. “I own a drug car,” she says to start the video. “Let’s talk about it.”
She explains that the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am has been in the family since 1979 when it was purchased by her mother.
“My mother would use this car to traffic [cocaine] from Miami to Daytona Beach,” she says. “She was arrested for distribution in 1992, but she was never caught for the trafficking portion. Before anyone calls me a narc, my mother has been gone for 13 years and the statute of limitation for trafficking is only like 5 years.”
According to Lex, it has multiple secret compartments, including underneath the hood.
“The hood scoop was false, so she could put bricks underneath,” she says. “And there’s a few other things in the car that were traps. But now it’s owned by a really boring millennial. I’ve never done the booger sugar. It’s a beautiful ornament in my yard that does not run.”
In the caption, Lex wrote, “This car has too much lore. If there is any interest, I will keep telling her story in order to fund getting it running again.”
In the comments section of the video, viewers reacted to Lex’s story about her mother and the 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
“She sounds like she was awesome,” one person said of Lex’s mother.
A second person said, “Yeah, but yellow?” Lex replied, “If you knew my mom, that checks out. ‘Flashy’ was her middle name.”
“Those cars are slow as [expletive],” a third person said. Lex said, “Not when they came out!”
According to Beverly Hills Car Club, the 1979 Firebird Trans Am is a “classic American muscle car” outfitted with a V-8 engine that is simultaneously powerful, reliable, and cool.
Car and Driver eulogized the model’s 400 T/A Pontiac engine, which was apparently too hot for the US government’s fuel economy standards. That would explain why later Firebirds weren’t as impressive to drive as the Trans Am.
However, many car enthusiasts still view the Trans Am as lesser than when it comes to collector’s items. A teenager posted a photo of their 1979 Trans Am to Reddit’s r/roastmycar about seven years ago, and the comments were fairly brutal.
“Even if you were a 70-year-old who saved and bought this car new and had daily driven it since, it wouldn’t change the fact that it’s a 40-year-old ponyloaf with less power than modern cars with half as many cylinders,” wrote one person. “That you’re young and choosing to drive a car that was ancient when you were conceived changes none of that.”
