“Look, you may be boycotting Walmart, but…”
A man says to always buy motor oil from Walmart because it is the cheapest. Is he right?
In a TikTok with over 6,900 views as of this writing, Jake (@jakesohvadventures) reveals that even a national boycott isn’t going to stop him from shopping at Walmart due to the price of motor oil.
“Look, you may be boycotting Walmart, but they got the cheapest oil,” Jake says.
Jake shows that he’s buying four jugs of Valvoline motor oil. He further explains his opinion in the caption.
“Boycott Walmart if you want, but when the exact same name-brand oil and filter cost me $30 less and I get free delivery, I know where I’m buying my oil change supplies. Same oil, same filter, same vehicle, just a whole lot less money. At the end of the day, I’m not loyal to a store. I’m loyal to saving money,” he says.
The “World Wide Walmart Boycott” taking place is from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 in response to corporate surveillance, low worker wages, a tragic shooting, and a viral ban of TikTok creator Damon Darling who bought people’s groceries. However, Darling urged his fans not to take part in the boycott because he wants to sell his branded “Meemaw Coffee” at Walmart.
The social media-driven movement is urging people to boycott Walmart stores, online shopping, and fuel stations.
Walmart has rolled out new features and restrictions for shoppers. First, Walmart has removed paper tags and installed digital price tags to allow for surge pricing. The company has also invested heavily into corporate and AI tracking to monitor consumer shopping patterns. Content creators have also accused Walmart of “short-weighting” products, meaning they weigh less than the advertised weight.
Car maintenance costs can quickly add up. Changing your own oil is considered an easy DIY maintenance task that saves money.
When buying motor oil, you may want to shop around to see who has the best price. Speciality automotive retailers like Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone or O’Reilly Auto Parts typically come to mind. However, there are other options for cheap oil.
Motor1 previously reported that Costco sells oil at low prices. According to MoneyGenius, Costco offers two 1.25-gallon jugs of its own private label Kirkland Full Synthetic 5W30 for $25 each.
As with most things, you can typically save money by buying in bulk.
Heavy Vehicle Inspection reports that Walmart is the consistent low price leader for cheap oil. Walmart offers more than 15 brands and does not require a membership like Costco.
According to Heavy Vehicle Inspection, Amazon ranks 4th as the retailer offers subscribe and save discounts up to 15%. Amazon also has price tracking tools which can find discounts from 30-40% for motor oil when spotted.
O’Reilly Auto Parts and AutoZone ranked 7th. They routinely offer 25-40% discounts.
Viewers agreed that Walmart’s motor oil prices are lower than other retailers.
“I have been buying oil and filters there for years,” one person wrote.
“Yeah, my last oil change was literally $13 from Walmart, granted I already had a dollar filter I bought at Habitat for Humanity that was still in the plastic,” another added.
“Check Amazon but yeah usually Walmart is the cheapest on the restore and protect,” a third shared.
Others noted that O’Reilly Auto Parts has a price match policy. AutoZone also offers price matching.
“O’Reilly’s will price match Walmart on oil,” one commented.
“I went to O’Reilly yesterday to get some oil. I buy the 5 quart jugs because my Silverado takes 8 quarts. Their oil was $42 and I told the woman Walmart had it for $31 and she matched it,” another chimed in.
